S2 Rock Bit Tool Steel Balls for Drilling Bearings
REDHILL supplies S2 rock bit tool steel balls for drilling equipment and bearings that face shock and wear. The steel combines toughness with high hardness after heat treatment. As a result, it suits service involving heavy loads and crushed rock.
Key Material Data
The following values provide reference data for S2 rock bit balls. However, heat treatment and ball size affect the final properties.
- Material: AISI S2 shock-resisting tool steel, UNS T41902.
- Typical composition: C 0.45–0.55%, Si 0.90–1.10%, Mn 0.30–0.50%, Mo 0.30–0.60%; iron balance.
- Reference hardness: 54–60 HRC, depending on heat treatment.
- Reference tensile strength: Approximately 2,100 MPa, depending on material condition.
- Density: Approximately 7.8 g/cm³.
- Magnetic properties: Magnetic.
Shock and Wear Resistance
S2 balances hardness with toughness. Therefore, engineers choose it for bearing parts that face repeated impacts and abrasive wear. In addition, hardening and tempering help achieve the required balance of properties.
For example, drill bit bearings must cope with changing loads during operation. However, material choice alone does not determine bearing life. Contact load, raceway design and lubrication also affect performance. Therefore, choose ball hardness to suit the complete bearing design.
Applications of S2 Rock Bit Tool Steel Balls
- Rock bit bearings: Rolling elements for well drilling equipment.
- Oilfield tools: Bearing parts for drilling systems that face shock and wear.
- Offshore drilling equipment: Selected bearing assemblies for drilling service.
Corrosion Protection
S2 has limited corrosion resistance. Therefore, choose lubrication and surface protection to suit the fluid, storage conditions and operating environment.
