Monel Balls for Marine Valves and Chemical Pumps
REDHILL supplies Monel balls for valves, pumps and flow control parts. Both K-500 and 400 combine nickel with copper. However, they differ in strength, heat treatment and magnetic response. Therefore, choose the grade to match the fluid, load and working conditions.
Monel K-500 Balls
Monel K-500 combines corrosion resistance with greater strength and hardness than Monel 400 after age hardening. Aluminum and titanium allow controlled heat treatment to raise its strength. As a result, engineers consider K-500 for valve and pump parts that face higher loads.
In addition, K-500 has a low response to magnetic fields at room temperature. However, processing can affect the surface response. Therefore, specify any magnetic limits with your inquiry.
Key Material Data
- UNS designation: N05500
- Main composition limits by weight: Ni + Co ≥63%; Cu 27–33%; Fe ≤2%
- Age-hardening additions by weight: Al 2.30–3.15%; Ti 0.35–0.85%
- Typical density: 8.44 g/cm³
Applications
For example, possible uses include:
- Ball check valves in marine equipment
- Pump and valve parts in chemical plants
- Flow control parts in oilfield instruments
However, aged K-500 can be more prone to stress corrosion cracking than Monel 400 in some fluids.
Monel 400 Balls
Monel 400 combines corrosion resistance with good toughness. For example, engineers use this alloy in marine valves and chemical pumps. In addition, they consider it for caustic solutions and hydrofluoric acid service.
Cold working raises its strength and hardness. However, heat treatment does not harden this grade. Therefore, match the hardness and strength to the contact load.
Key Material Data
- UNS designation: N04400
- Main composition limits by weight: Ni + Co ≥63%; Cu 28–34%; Fe ≤2.5%; Mn ≤2%
- Typical density: 8.80 g/cm³
Applications
For example, possible uses include:
- Marine valve balls and seats
- Check balls in chemical pumps
- Metering systems for suitable process fluids
However, Monel 400 can be magnetic at room temperature. Therefore, check its suitability for instruments that need a low magnetic response.
Seawater Service and Grade Selection
Both grades resist corrosion in flowing seawater. However, stagnant water and deposits can lead to pitting. Therefore, assess flow conditions as well as the water chemistry.
In addition, check the full fluid mix, temperature and load before choosing a grade. Hardness and strength depend on the final material condition.
Ball Grades, Sizes and Ordering
REDHILL offers metric and inch ball sizes. In addition, ask us about custom diameters. For guidance on size and form tolerances, see our precision ball grades.
Finally, send us the alloy, diameter, quantity and working conditions. Include any required hardness, strength or magnetic limits so we can review your requirements.
