M50 Tool Steel Balls for High-Temperature Bearings

REDHILL supplies M50 tool steel balls for bearings that need wear resistance and hardness at higher operating temperatures. The alloy resists softening during hot service. As a result, engineers use M50 in aircraft engines and other demanding bearing systems.

Key Material Data

The following values provide reference data for M50 bearing steel. However, the material specification and heat treatment determine the final properties.

  • Material: M50 chromium-molybdenum-vanadium tool steel.
  • Reference composition: C 0.80%, Cr 4.00%, Mo 4.50%, V 1.00%; iron balance. These are nominal values for the main elements.
  • Reference hardness: 62–64 HRC after suitable hardening and tempering.
  • Density: Approximately 8.0 g/cm³.
  • Magnetic properties: Magnetic.

Hot Hardness and Wear Resistance

M50 retains hardness at temperatures that can limit the use of conventional AISI 52100 bearing steel. Therefore, it suits bearing designs where heat resistance matters. In addition, its alloy carbides support resistance to wear.

For example, aircraft engine bearings face repeated contact loads and high operating temperatures. M50 offers a useful combination of hot hardness and rolling contact fatigue resistance. However, bearing life also depends on load, lubrication, surface finish and assembly design.

VIM-VAR Material

VIM-VAR grades use vacuum induction melting followed by vacuum arc remelting. This process helps improve steel cleanliness. Therefore, specify the required melting route and material standard when requesting a quote.

Applications of M50 Tool Steel Balls

  • Aircraft engines: Ball bearings for service at higher temperatures.
  • Precision spindles: Selected bearing designs for grinding and milling equipment.
  • Industrial equipment: Specialized bearings that need wear resistance during hot service.

Corrosion Protection

M50 has limited corrosion resistance. Therefore, match the lubricant and any surface protection to the operating environment.
