Platinum–Iridium Alloy Balls for Precision Contacts and Fluid Control

REDHILL supplies platinum–iridium alloy balls for contacts, instruments and selected fluid control systems. These alloys combine high density with strong corrosion resistance. As a result, they suit applications that require compact metal parts with defined contact properties.

Key Technical Specifications

The figures below give a guide for two common alloy compositions. However, cold work and heat treatment affect the final properties.

  • Composition Options: Pt90/Ir10 and Pt80/Ir20 by weight.
  • Crystal Structure: Face-centered cubic (FCC).
  • Pt90/Ir10 Hardness: Approximately 105 HV annealed or 215 HV work hardened.
  • Pt80/Ir20 Hardness: Approximately 190 HV annealed or 300 HV work hardened.
  • Density: Approximately 21.5–21.7 g/cm³, depending on composition.
  • Melting Ranges: Pt90/Ir10: 1,790–1,800°C; Pt80/Ir20: 1,830–1,855°C.

Benefits and Material Selection

Iridium strengthens platinum and can improve resistance to wear. In addition, the high density allows compact parts with relatively high mass.

However, chemical resistance depends on the fluid and temperature. Therefore, confirm compatibility for the actual process conditions.

At high temperatures in air, iridium can form volatile oxides. Therefore, specify the atmosphere and exposure time for hot service.

Applications of Platinum–Iridium Alloy Balls

For example, typical uses include:

  • Electrical Contacts and Sensors: Contact elements for defined current, force and wear conditions.
  • Precision Valves and Dosing: Sealing elements for compatible fluids and suitable contact loads.
  • Medical and Laboratory Instruments: Components with specified purity, finish and documentation.
  • Metrology and Precision Mechanisms: Contact and locating elements for measuring systems.

Available Sizes and Precision Requirements

  • Precision Requirements: Diameter tolerance, roundness and surface finish to an agreed specification.
  • Sizes: Standard imperial and metric diameters; custom sizes on request.
