AISI 52100 Chrome Steel Balls for Precision Bearings

REDHILL supplies AISI 52100 chrome steel balls for bearings, automotive parts and industrial machinery. This high-carbon chromium steel develops high hardness and wear resistance after heat treatment. As a result, it suits rolling contact and other wear applications.

Key Material Data

The following values provide reference data for the material. However, ball size, steel specification and heat treatment affect the final properties.

  • Reference composition: C 0.98–1.10%, Cr 1.30–1.60%, Mn 0.25–0.45%, Si 0.15–0.35%; P and S each ≤0.025%; iron balance.
  • Structure: Tempered martensite with carbides after hardening and tempering.
  • Reference hardness: 60–66 HRC, depending on ball size and heat treatment.
  • Reference tensile strength: Approximately 2,200 MPa (320 ksi), depending on material condition.
  • Density: Approximately 7.83 g/cm³.
  • Magnetic properties: Magnetic at room temperature.

Hardness, Wear Resistance and Precision

Hardness helps the steel resist wear and deformation at contact points. Therefore, 52100 is a common choice for rolling elements. In addition, the precision grade defines the allowed variation in ball size and roundness.

However, 52100 has limited corrosion resistance. Therefore, match lubrication and surface protection to the working environment.

Applications of AISI 52100 Chrome Steel Balls

For example, common applications include:

  • Bearings: Rolling elements in precision ball bearings.
  • Automotive systems: Transmission bearings, steering assemblies and selected engine components.
  • Machine tools: Spindle bearings and precision motion systems.
  • Industrial equipment: Couplings, guides and other wear parts.
  • Aerospace equipment: Selected bearing applications with defined material and quality requirements.

Grades and Sizes

  • Precision grades: G3–G500. See our precision grade guide for tolerance details.
  • Diameter range: 0.5–150.0 mm, subject to the required grade and material condition.

In addition, specify the surface finish and any core hardness requirement with your inquiry. Finally, send us your ball diameter, quantity and working conditions. We can then confirm the available specification and lead time.
